Deborah Jean Davis, 57, of Johnson City, TN, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at her residence after a lengthy and very courageous battle with cancer.
Ms. Davis was born July 24, 1954, in Johnson City, TN. She was the daughter of Gladys Wheelock Davis and the late Clifford Davis. She lived her entire life in the Gray and Johnson City, TN, area.
Ms. Davis attended Stratton Elementary School. She was a 1972 graduate of Science Hill High School (Johnson City, TN), where she lettered in both marching and concert band. Upon her graduation from high school, she attended East Tennessee State University, where she earned a degree in education.
Ms. Davis was employed as a Print Technician at Science Hill High School for several years. She was also employed, at one time, by the Johnson City Press.
Ms. Davis was of the Baptist faith and was an active member of Southwestern Baptist Church (Johnson City, TN). In previous years, she had attended Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church (Gray, TN) and Unaka Avenue Baptist Church (Johnson City, TN).
Ms. Davis spent much of her life in volunteer service to others. She spent much of her time working for and through her church, where she organized and performed a puppet ministry for children. She also volunteered with the Johnson City Senior Center, where she was a member of Musical Voices. Ms. Davis also volunteered her time at Mountain View Elementary School (Johnson City, TN).
In addition to her father, Clifford “Tip” Davis, she is preceded in death by a brother, Clifford “Buddy” Davis.
Survivors of Deborah Jean Davis include her daughter, Gladys Jean Cook and husband, DeWayne Barner (Johnson City, TN); her mother, Gladys Wheelock Davis (Gray, TN); a sister, Barbara Hodge (Johnson City, TN); a brother, DeWayne Davis (Gray, TN); 2 grandsons, Kaleb Barner and Kayden Barner; several nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family of Deborah Jean Davis will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 1, 2011, at Southwestern Baptist Church (1112 Cherokee Road, Johnson City, TN).
Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Greg Salyer, Rev. Bill Peeler and Dr. Jody Jenkins, will follow the visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 1, 2011, following the funeral service. The procession will leave from Southwestern Baptist Church and travel to Monte Vista Memorial Gardens. The service will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
