NASHVILLE — Lillian Evelyn McNeil Loudy — Evelyn, beloved mother of Janice Loudy Spillman of Brentwood, TN, died Monday, July 18, 2011, six days after her 89th birthday, from a series of strokes.
She was born and lived most of her life in Johnson City, moving to Nashville in 2009 to live closer to her daughter. Evelyn was a kind and caring woman who delighted in doing for others. She was sweet, gentle, and humble.
Evelyn loved sports, aerobics, dancing, playing cards and reading. She was especially admired for her homemade candies, jewelry making and needlework. (Lucky were the recipients of her goodies.)
Evelyn and her husband were active members of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Johnson City where they led the youth program for many years. Evelyn retired from WJHL-TV in 1985 after 25 years of service and was the last surviving member of the SHHS Class of 1941 Reunion Committee. After retiring, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels as long as her health permitted.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, J. Eugene Loudy, in 1984; her parents, Emma Keene McNeil Parker and Robert McNeil; two sisters, Bernice McNeil and Mary Lynn Hatley; and two nephews, James Chandler Hatley and Randy Jones.
In addition to her daughter, Evelyn is survived by sisters-in-law, Betty Douglas Witt, Kingsport, Blanche Jones, Jonesborough, and Margaret Loudy,Paris; brothers-in-law, Lester Jones, Jonesborough, Fred Arthur, Springfield, OR, and James Hatley, Johnson City; nieces, Margaret Jones Denton, Mt. Carmel, Ann Jones Morelock, Jonesborough, Belinda Peterson, Springfield, OR, Rebecca Miller, Catherine Callahan and Rachel Douglas, all of Kingsport, Sue Ellen Scott, Hamilton, N.C., Marjorie Fields, Greeneville, Debbie Fields and Rebecca Woods, both of Johnson City, and Jamie Rhoten, Hamilton, N.C.; nephews, Ronnie Hatley and Richard David Bennett, both of Johnson City, Frank Jones, Milford, NH, Lee Jones, Jonesborough, David Douglas and Jonathan Douglas, both of Kingsport, and Dan Loudy, Eldorado, IL; cousin, Mary Keene Lane, Johnson City; good friends, Joan Hendricks, Blountville, Jewell Harlan and Shirley Crowe, both of Johnson City, Virginia Amos, Olive Davenport and Ruth Bradley, all of Nashville.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and aids of St. Thomas Hospital 7B who provided outstanding service to Evelyn during the last two weeks of her life. We are especially grateful to Amber, Anderson, Brenda, Dawn, Ruby, Laverne, Gregory and doctors Fisher, McDonald, Wilson and Yu.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, July 22, 2011, at 2:00 P.M. from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Graham Spurrier, Hanes Lancaster and Lee Harlan speaking. Special music will be provided by Jim Wilson and Roddy Byrd.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00-2:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
