James Small, Jonesborough

Mr. James D. Small, age 77, Jonesborough, TN, passed away in his sleep Saturday, July 16, 2011, at his residence.
Mr. Small was born in Athens, TN, and son of the late John Hixon & Martha Elizabeth Sharp Small. In addition to his parents, Mr. Small was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances Gilmore Small; and one sister, Johnny Helen Small.
He was a member of Fairhaven United Methodist Church.
Mr. Small was a United States Navy Veteran. He retired, after 30 years, as an X-Ray Technician for the Veterans Administration Hospital.
He was a former member of Johnson City Optimist Club. He coached youth and women’s softball, Pee Wee and Little League Baseball. He was a Boy Scout Leader and participated in Johnson City Boys Club and the Johnson City Soap Box Derby. He was also a member of Johnson City Grandsquares (square dancing club).
Survivors include one daughter, Susan Lynne Small, of the home; brothers and sisters-in-law, William F. & Hannah Small, Hampton, VA, and Wallace Dean & Ann Small, Johnson City; sister-in-law, Rachel Gilmore Walters, Jamestown, NC; two nephews; four nieces; two great-nephews; five great-nieces; and two great-great nieces.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Oakwood Memorial Cemetery in High Point, NC, with Pastor Carla Lang presiding. Family & friends will serve as pallbearers.
