Hazel McCulley, Johnson City

Hazel R. McCulley entered into rest Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at the age of 96.
She was the daughter of the late, R.W. and Vesta Dewald McCulley.
Miss McCulley graduated from Boones Creek High School in 1932 and from Tennessee State College in 1943. She taught school in Washington County and Johnson City School System before retiring in 1973.
In addition to her teaching career, she was an active member of Boones Creek Christian Church. serving as a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and the Missionary Society.
Miss McCulley was an active volunteer at Johnson City Memorial Hospital, Emmanuel School of Religion Library and Boones Creek Elementary School. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa.
In addition to her parents, Miss McCulley was preceded in death by her brother, James D. McCulley; her sister, Mildred Hodge; and an infant brother, Ralph.
She is survived by two nephews, Jim McCulley and Tom Hodge; nieces, Joyce Atchley, Sandy Newman, Mary Stewart, caregiver; and several great nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 16, 2011, in the East Chapel of the Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor John E. Wasem officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Monte Vista Memory Gardens following the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boones Creek Christian Church or to the Hazel McCulley Scholarship Fund at: Johnson University, 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, TN 37998.
