ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Katharine Natalie Mason, age 93, passed away July 4, 2011, in the Health Care Center of Goodwin House, Alexandria, VA.
She was born February 21, 1918, in Washington County, VA, to the late Charles Nathan and Kate Johnson Mason. She graduated from Abingdon High School, Abingdon, VA, in 1935. In 1937, she received her teaching certification from Teacher’s Preparatory College in Harrisonburg, VA.
She began teaching in a one room schoolhouse in Washington County, VA, then taught elementary school in Tazewell County, VA, and Fishersville Elementary School, Fishersville, VA. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from James Madison College, Harrisonburg, VA, in 1946. From the late 1940s until her retirement in 1977, she taught junior high math in the Alexandria, VA, school system.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Fred Lewis Mason; and sister-in-law, Ora King Mason.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Alexandria, VA. She was a resident of Goodwin House, Alexandria, from 1983 until her death. She enjoyed gardening, reading, basket weaving, quilting, knitting, photography, had served as editor of the Goodwin House Gazette, and appreciated a beautiful sunset.
Miss Mason is survived by her nieces, Elizabeth King Mason and husband, Dr. Michael J. Brown, Elizabethton, TN, Virginia Mason Young, Fall Branch, TN, and Marie Mason Ketron and husband, Michael Ketron, Bristol, TN; great nephew, Nathaniel Robert Young, Pulaski, VA; great nieces, Nora Katharine Ketron (her namesake), Chattanooga, TN, and Allyson Leah Ketron, Knoxville, TN. She regarded the Goodwin House and Health Care Staff as extended family, and leaves behind many dear friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Goodwin House Chapel July 16, 2011, at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. J. Bruce Stewart, Chaplain, and Rev. Julie Holmes officiating.
Private inurnment will take place July 23, 2011, at Knollkregg Cemetery, Abingdon, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Goodwin House Foundation, 4800 Fillmore Ave., Alexandria, VA 22311.
