Arnold Hale, Piney Flats

PINEY FLATS — Mr. Arnold D. Hale, age 84, Piney Flats, passed away Monday, July 4, 2011, at Continuum Courtyards Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s Unit, Johnson City.
Mr. Hale was the son of the late Eugene Lewis and Monta Torbett Hale. He was a member and elder of New Bethel Presbyterian Church, Piney Flats, and was a rural mail carrier and an electrician for many years.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during World War II, and was in two major battles, Iwo Jima and Brown Beach, Okinawa. He also served at the end of the war in the occupation of Japan.
Mr. Hale was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Hale King; two brothers, Eugene Lewis Hale Jr., and Charles Edward Hale; one sister, Clara Gail Hale.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lela Besse Ford Hale; two daughters, Connie Marie Hale Caronna and husband, Steve, Raleigh, NC, Vickie Lynn Hale Carver, Bluff City; one sister, Sarah Boyer and husband, Rondal, Johnson City; one brother, Roger Hale and wife, Barbara, Gray; Son-in-law, Kenneth King, and wife Suzy, Bristol. Eight Grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Hale will be conducted at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday, July 6, 2011, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Dr. Andrew E. Spence Jr. and Dr. Angus Shaw officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:30 until 7:30 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:30 A.M. Thursday, July 7, from New Bethel Cemetery, Piney Flats. Active pallbearers will be Brad Torbett, Bryan Torbett, Micah Caronna, Joshua Caronna, Neil Clark, Joseph Suo, Steven Gentry and Donald King III. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 11:20 A.M. Thursday.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Caris Hospice of Johnson City and the Employees of Continuum Courtyards for their loving care for the last 13 months.
