A 34-year-old man stabbed a minor during a fight over the boy’s girlfriend in south Johnson City early Thursday morning, police said a court record.

About 1 a.m., police were simultaneously called to Johnson City Medical Center to investigate the stabbing and to South Roan and Bonita Drive regarding a suspicious man covered in blood.

That man was James Blackburn, 1110 High St., who was later charged with aggravated assault.

At JCMC, police met with both the victim and his girlfriend, who also is a minor. The girl told police she had been walking on South Roan near Plymouth Road to meet her boyfriend when she was approached by a man acting erratically. The man was walking extremely close to her and making advances, she said, so she called her boyfriend, who ran to meet her.

As the couple tried to walk away, the man began shouting at them, telling the girl she should not be with the boy and hurling racial slurs at the boy, she told police.

Police said Blackburn then ran at the couple and started punching the boy. As the boy defended himself, Blackburn pulled out a small pocketknife and stabbed the boy repeatedly. The boy suffered injuries to his inner left thigh and groin area.

The minors then ran from the scene to the victim’s residence, and the girl’s mother drove both to JCMC.

Blackburn matched the description given by the victims, and officers took the girl to the scene to verify his identity. Blackburn was covered in blood and had a pocketknife that also had blood on it, police said in the court record.

Blackburn was held at the Washington County Detention Center on $50,000 bond awaiting a Sessions Court appearance set for later Thursday.
