BUTLER — The finding of a pistol was not a fortunate event for a Butler man Thursday.

Deputy Hal Adair of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department responded to Rye Branch Road on a call about a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Adair said the victim, Adam Lee Potter, had said he found a gun and had accidentally shot himself in the hand. He was transported to the hospital prior to Adair’s arrival, but said the gun had been left soon the back porch.

Adair found the gun, which he identified as a Sterling Arms .22 caliber pistol with the initials “BKT” on the grip. Adair said the pistol had a live round in the chamber and an additional round in the magazine. He said there were also blood drops around the pistol, leading into the residence.

At the time Adair was on the scene, he said there were no witnesses to describe how Potter had shot himself.
