MOUNTAIN CITY — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of an inmate in the Johnson County Jail over the weekend.

Susan Niland, public information officer for TBI said the agency is investigating the death of David Pendergrass, 48, at the Johnson County Jail on March 19. She said the TBI began the investigation at the request of the 1st Judicial District Attorney General Tony Clark.

Niland said Pendergrass had been brought to the jail the night before his death. Around 4:40 p.m. on March 19, when corrections officers brought his meal to his cell, Penndergrass was found unresponsive but alive. He was taken by Johnson County Emergency Medical Services to the hospital, where he died.

She said the agency was awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death. “The investigation remains active and ongoing,” Niland said.
