BLOUNTVILLE — A wanted man who reportedly visited the Sullivan County jail to pick up a released inmate is now behind bars himself, as deputies say he attempted to drive from the parking lot when approached by a deputy, but crashed into a ditch just outside the entrance.
The man also faces a charge of assault on an officer. After being initially stirred from his slumber in the vehicle by a deputy, the suspect reportedly slammed his car door on the officer's hand.
The incident occurred at 11 a.m. Sunday outside of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office, 140 Blountville Bypass. According to SCSO Public Information Officer Leslie Earhart, police were tipped off to a wanted man who was sitting inside a vehicle.
When officer's approached the man's car, a maroon Chevy, they located Mark William Brummett, 46, asleep behind the wheel. Brummett, who has four outstanding warrants for failure to appear, was allegedly accompanied by a female passenger who was asleep in the back of the car. Earhart says they had arrived to pick up an inmate being released from jail.
