A Chilhowie, Va. man was taken into custody Wednesday on a vehicular homicide charge from what police said was a drunken wreck on Interstate 26 in April, according to a Johnson City police press release.

Nathan G. Fullen, 18, 19 Fullen Lane, Chilhowie, turned himself in at the Washington County Detention Center after learning about the warrant for his arrest.

In a press release, police said Fullen had a blood alcohol content of .14 at the time of the crash. The legal limit for driving drunk is .08. He is charged with DUI and vehicular homicide.

The victim, Sherri Lee Polk, 36, Chilhowie, Va. died the same day of the crash from injuries she received. Polk was a passenger in a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Fullen.

Fullen ran off into the median around 5 a.m. that morning near mile marker 11.2, then struck the metal cables and posts as it turned sideways. The car hit the leading end of a guardrail on the passenger’s side, police said.

Fullen received non-life threatening injuries in the crash.

Police did not say how Fullen and Polk knew each other. Fullen was being held on a $20,000 bond and will be arraigned Friday in Washington County General Sessions Court.
