Man picks up 5th DUI charge after police say he fled scene of accident

Staff Report • May 6, 2014 at 8:02 PM

Police arrested a man on his fifth charge of drunken driving after they said he told them he fled the scene of an accident.

On Saturday, Johnson City Police Department officers arrested Johnny R. Estepp, 60, 729 Princeton Road, after investigating a hit-and-run incident that occurred at the intersection of West 8th Avenue and Boone Street.

In the arrest report, police said the vehicle’s owners told them Estepp had hit their car and left. After finding Estepp inside Everette’s Saloon, police said he told them he left the scene of the accident because he had “had a few beers.” Police added that an open case of beer was found inside Estepp’s vehicle.

Police said Estepp appeared intoxicated, and that he performed poorly on field sobriety tests. Upon checking his driving record, police said they learned Estepp’s license had been revoked on four separate occasions for four separate charges of driving under the influence, and that his license was still revoked.

Estepp was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving on a revoked license (fifth offense), and driving under the influence (fifth offense). He was held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond. He will appear in Sessions Court Monday morning to face his charges.
