DTF says pair used firm as front

A Johnson City couple used an automobile detailing shop as a cover to process money from a criminal enterprise since 2012, according to court records filed last week by a 1st Judicial District Drug Task Force agent.

Charles R. Underwood, 40, and a woman investigators described as his wife, Nikki R. Underwood, 27, 114 Brice Lane, are both charged with money laundering. They were arrested April 25, court records show.

Details of the alleged “criminal enterprise,” are few, but the investigating agency — the DTF — investigates drug crimes within the four-county judicial district.

The affidavit of complaint, filed by DTF Agent J.T. Kite, indicated the Underwoods used Classic Touch Auto Detailing, 3101 N. Roan St., as a front for the money laundering.

“Over the past two years Charles R. Underwood has been involved in a criminal enterprise involving the auto detailing shop based in Johnson City. Charles has used his auto detailing business as a face business to divert proceeds of his criminal enterprise for his personal use. He has produced false documents in an attempt to make the business appear lawful,” Kite wrote in Charles Underwood’s warrant.

Details in Nikki Underwood’s warrant mirrored allegations lodged against her husband.

Both Underwoods are free on a $1,000 bond each. They each have a preliminary hearing scheduled in Washington County Sessions Court June 11.
