HAMPTON — A burglar stole approximately 98 cartons of cigarettes from the Hampton Bait Shop, 126 First Ave., early Thursday morning.

Deputy Paul Morell of the Carter County Sheriff's Department said the alarm sounded at the store at 3:44 a.m. when the front door glass was smashed,

Security camera footage revealed the burglar had been in a dark compact pickup truck, possibly a mid to late 90's Chevrolet S-10. The truck had a lighter colored tailgate. A man dressed in a dark jacket and mask got out of the driver's side of the truck and used some type of tool to break the glass and kick the window.

The burglar brought a cardboard box inside with him and began loading Marlboro cigarettes that were on a display.

The case is being investigated by Lt. Tim Horne.
