ELIZABETHTON — Two prisoners in the Carter County Jail had another day in court on Tuesday after they were charged with assaulting a third prisoner last week.

Alexander James Russom, 28, 3222 Cross Mountain Road, Mountain City and Johnathan Paul Zimmerman, 26, 701 Allen Avenue, were both charged with assault on Feb. 12 by Corrections Officer Stephen Salley after he reported seeing the prisoners assault Bradley Aaron Mizzell in Charlie Block of the Carter County Detention Center.

Salley said the men continued to assault Mizzell and failed to obey his commands to stop. Salley reported that he had to use his department-issued chemical spray to stop the assault.

All three prisoners were taken to the medical section of the jail. A facial X-ray was conducted on Mizzell, which Salley said showed no broken bones. He said Mizzell did have two black eyes, a cut lip, contusions to the head, sore ribs and a possible concussion. He was placed in a holding cell in booking for 24 hours so his medical condition could be monitored.

Inmates Russom and Zimmerman were also checked by the medical staff and cleared.

Salley said the security cameras showed Zimmerman and Russom assaulting Mizzell.

Russom and Zimmerman were in Sessions Court on Tuesday on their assault charges. Both pleaded guilty.

Judge John Walton fined each man $25 and court costs. Each was sentenced to a year's probation with Cross Roads. Russom was ordered to serve an additional 109 days in the jail. Zimmerman was ordered to attend anger management counseling.

Walton ordered both men to have no contact with Mizzell.
