Johnson City police arrested a 50-year-old city resident Wednesday on a charge that he used a fraudulent check to steal $1,000 from a local credit union.

Jerry L. Proffitt, 304 S. Broadway St., opened an account at Greater Eastern Credit Union, 105 Mountain Home Drive, on Dec. 10, and deposited a $1,680.00 check, police said. He then immediately withdrew $1,000, leaving the remaining money in the account.

The credit union was notified that the check was fraudulent, so mangers notified Proffitt, but he refused to pay back the $1,000 he had withdrawn, police said.

Charged with theft over $1,000, Proffitt was jailed Wednesday in the Washington County Detention Center on $50,000 bond pending a Sessions Court appearance Thursday.
