ELIZABETHTON — A man awaiting trial for second degree murder has picked up a new charge of assaulting an officer.Israel Benjamin Goudy, 33, was charged on Thursday by Lt. Penny Garland of the Carter County Sheriff's Department. The charge stems from an alleged incident on Dec. 15. with Corrections Officer Chris Russell.Goudy is already facing a charge of second degree murder in the shooting death of Larry Whittaker at Whittaker's home on Reynolds Road on Oct. 16, 2011. He was arraigned on that charge on Oct. 2, 2012.Russell said he was conducting the noon feeding when he ordered Goudy and his cell mate come out for chow. He said Goudy refused to obey the order, telling him that none of the other guards made him come out of his cell during feeding.Russell said when Goudy did come out, he reached in the box containing the sandwiches and threw one in his Russell's face. Russell then placed Goudy in handcuffs. He said Goudy began making threats that he was already facing a murder charge and was not afraid to kill the guard. As Russell was escorting Goudy to booking, he said Goudy head-butted him in the face. Backup officers then came to Russell's aid and escorted both to the medical department, where Russell was treated for a lacerated lip.Goudy is scheduled to answer the new charge on Jan. 13 in Sessions Court.
