Johnson City police: Pair used debt repayment to steal cash, jewelry

Staff Report • Nov 26, 2013 at 9:31 AM

Two Johnson City residents were arrested Monday on charges that they stole more than $1,300 in cash and jewelry from an apartment while pretending to settle a debt.

Daniel Blaine Coffey, 26, and Sarah Bridgett Story, 27, 441 Mayberry Road, were each charged with theft over $1,000.

Police said the pair and a third person, whose name was not included in a news release, went to the victim's apartment on Oct. 13 under the pretense of paying the victim back for a debt Coffey owed her. After the victim spoke privately with the third person in another room, Coffey and that person left. The victim realized she was missing about $1,325 in jewelry and cash.

When Coffey and the third person returned, the victim confronted them about the missing jewelry and money, and Coffey, Story and the third person left.

On Monday, Coffey and Story turned themselves in at the Washington County Detention Center, where each was held on $10,000 bond. Sessions Court appearances were set for today.
