ELIZABETHTON — A man described as a long-time treasurer at Beck Mountain Baptist Church, 2797 Siam Road, has been charged with stealing church funds.

Silas Edward Sams surrendered to the Carter County Sheriff's Department on Monday following his indictment by a county grand jury on a charge of theft over $60,000.

Sheriff Chris Mathes said an investigation of Sams began after church leaders came to the sheriff's department seeking help.

Following the investigation, a presentment was sent to the grand jury on Nov. 8, which accused Sams of taking money and other items over a period extending from Sept. 1, 2006 and July 9, 2013.

Mathes said the exact amount of the missing money could not be determined, but said it was over $100,000.

Sams is out of jail on $25,000 bond.
