ELIZABETHTON — A man and woman were arrested after their vehicle was stopped on suspicion that the man was driving drunk. Additional charges were placed and the arresting deputy discovered a 5-year-old child was riding in the truck.

William Paul Batman, 64, 306 Earl St., Johnson City was charged with driving under the influence and child restraint violation. Melanie Nichole Keylon, 28, 215 H. Heaton Road, was charged with public intoxication and attempted child neglect.

Carter County Sheriff's Deputy Sarah McWhirter said she was on patrol on Wilbur Dam Road at 2:15 a.m., when she noticed a GMC Sonoma moving erratically and going into the opposite lane of travel. Batman failed a field sobriety test and was arrested.

McWhiter said Keylon had also been drinking and had difficulty following instructions. She said Keylon's son was not in a proper seat for a child and was not restrained. She said the boy was only wearing a pair of gray mesh shorts in temperatures which were in the 30s.

Batman and Keylon are scheduled to answer the charges in Sessions Court on Nov. 15.
