Police used smartphone tracking capabilities to locate a women’s missing purse early Saturday morning.

According to a Johnson City police news release, a woman said her purse, which contained her phone, went missing from the back of her chair at Tipton Street Pub about 1:30 a.m., when she went to the bar’s restroom.

Using the phone’s tracking technology, officers were led to the home of 40-year-old Jimmie A. Bennett, 2050 Dave Buck Road. Bennett told them he found the purse in a downtown bar and brought it home for safekeeping.

Bennett was arrested for theft over $500 and was brought to Washington County Detention Center, where he was being held on $5,000 bond.

Bennett’s arraignment hearing is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Monday in Sessions Court.
