Police: Johnson City man ran from traffic stop after speeding in stolen SUV

Johnson City police said a West Chilhowie Avenue man ran after he was caught speeding Wednesday night in a stolen sport utility vehicle.

Joseph Griffith, 29, 404 W. Chilhowie Ave., was stopped for speeding in a 1996 White Chevrolet Blazer on West Market Street about 10:45 p.m.

After the SUV stopped, Griffith tried running away, but police caught him in a short foot chase. Police learned the Blazer had been stolen in Johnson City on Oct. 9.

Griffith was charged with felony evading arrest, driving on a revoked license, possession of a stolen vehicle and speeding. He was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $21,000 bond pending a Sessions Court appearance today.
