Johnson City police: Man charged with reckless endangerment after nearly striking 3 officers with vehicle

Staff Report • Sep 18, 2013 at 9:17 PM

A man was arrested on drug and reckless endangerment charges Tuesday after he nearly ran down three Johnson City police officers while fleeing a traffic stop Tuesday night, police said in a news release.

It was 21-year-old Justin Bookwalter's second arrest resulting from a traffic stop this summer. He also was arrested on drug charges in a Johnson City hotel raid in 2012.

According to the news release, police tried to stop Bookwalter, 1110 Sunset Court, about 8 p.m. Tuesday, but he fled in his vehicle, nearly striking three officers. Police soon found the vehicle, however, and spotted Bookwalter running away. He was caught soon after.

Bookwalter was charged with conspiracy to sell schedule II drugs, possession with intent to sell schedule II drugs, destruction/tampering with evidence, felony evading arrest, three counts of felony reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and riving on a revoked license.

He was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $73,000 bond pending a Sessions Court appearance this afternoon.

In June, Bookwalter was one of two men arrested in Johnson City after police stopped him for speeding and found drugs and a weapon in the vehicle, according to reports at the time.

Bookwalter, who had a Georgia address at the time, was charged with speeding and driving on a revoked license, while his passenger was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of Schedule II for resale, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and introducing contraband into a jail.

In June 2012, Bookwalter was one of three Georgia men arrested after police found crack cocaine, marijuana and pills in a raid at Sleep Inn & Suites, 2020 Franklin Terrace Court, police said at the time.

Police found 5.2 grams of crack cocaine in a plastic bag and 10 hydrocodone pills in another bag, as well as digital scales. About a half pound of marijuana was found in a jacket pocket in a duffel bag. Police also seized $1,255 in cash from the room.

Bookwalter was charged with possession of schedule II for resale, possession of schedule III for resale, maintaining a dwelling where narcotics are sold, and resisting arrest.
