Ex-Hawkins County jail guard charged with assaulting inmate from Johnson City

Staff Report • Sep 18, 2013 at 9:31 PM

ROGERSVILLE — A former Hawkins County jailer was arrested this morning on a charge that he assaulted a Johnson City man in the jail in February.

Roy Junior Mathes, 37, Rogersville, was indicted on one count of assault by the Hawkins County grand jury earlier this week, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced in a news release.

The incident occurred Feb. 23. The inmate, Lloyd Gibson, 24, Johnson City, was being held for failing to appear in court on previous charges, and he was removed from his cell because of his involvement in a vandalism incident in the jail.

During the removal, Mathes pushed Gibson causing the inmate to strike his head against at least one jail door in the facility, the TBI said.

Mathes was booked into the Hawkins County Jail this morning.
