A Jonesborough man arrested this week on statutory rape charges now faces 37 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of sexual battery.

The new charges on Michael Joseph Clay, 48, 1645 Roy Phillips Road, were filed late Wednesday and the warrant served on him in jail.

According to the warrant, Clay had sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl between Mother’s Day 2013 and July 4. He also is accused of sending the teen inappropriate photos by text message at least 10 times, and the girl sent Clay nude pictures of herself as well.

Those offenses occurred between March and July, Washington County Sheriff’s Investigator Jared Taylor wrote in the warrant.

Clay was already facing four counts of aggravated statutory rape for allegedly having sex with the girl.

Taylor noted in the second warrant that he conferred with the District Attorney General’s Office and was instructed to draw up the additional charges.

Neither warrant indicates how Clay had access to the girl or what type of authority he had over her.

Clay was arraigned on the first warrant Wednesday and on the second warrant Thursday. The cases were reset until next week for a preliminary hearing.

He’s being held on $100,000 bond.
