After being released from the hospital, the woman shot last week when she tried to attack her sister-in-law with a knife was arrested Tuesday, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Kristen Laurie Cutshaw Bennett, 24, 187 Berry Ridge Road, is charged with aggravated assault in the Aug. 23 incident with her neighbor and sister-in-law, Amanda Hartley.

When deputies responded to the shooting call at 181 Berry Ridge Road, which is Hartley’s address, they found Bennett with a gunshot wound. She was transported to the Johnson City Medical Center where she was admitted for treatment.

During the investigation, deputies learned that Hartley was home around 1:30 a.m. Aug. 23 when she heard a noise from outside her home. There had been recent vandalism at her property, so she got her gun and went to investigate.

“When she went around the corner she saw the defendant (Bennett) standing on a fence that had been knocked down holding a knife,” Investigator Herman Hagie wrote in a court affidavit.

Hartley told Bennett to go home and leave her alone, then went to her front door to go back inside. She then realized that door was locked.

Hartley told investigators that Bennett had followed her onto the porch and began stabbing at her with the knife.

“(Hartley) advised she then fired her handgun into the ground in an attempt to scare (Bennett). The victim advised the defendant then started backing off the porch and into the yard,” Hagie wrote.

Hartley took that opportunity to go to the side door where she had exited the house. She said she was about halfway down the front porch ramp when Bennett started towards her again and had the knife raised up.

“The victim advised she then fired her handgun again towards the ground at which time the defendant threw the knife at her with it striking the residence behind her,” Hagie reported.

Investigators found the knife form the porch as well as “some notes of a threatening manner,” near the fence.

Bennett was being held on a $50,000 bond and will be arraigned this afternoon.
