Kingsport police cleared of excessive force in June shooting, wounded man indicted

A grand jury decided Tuesday that the Kingsport Police Department did not use excessive force in a June shooting.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations was called in to compile a report on the June 11 incident. The findings were presented as evidence to the grand jury Tuesday in the case of Jeffrey Chase Caldwell, 25.

The grand jury found that the KPD did not use excessive force and the officer who shot Caldwell, Joe Valentine, also did not use excessive force.

The grand jury also indicted Caldwell on simple assault for placing Valentine in reasonable fear of bodily injury. Simple assault is a misdemeanor.
