ELIZABETHTON — Two people have been charged with robbing a woman in an Elizabethton grocery store parking lot in late July.

Billy J. Moretz, 31, 239 Grindstaff Road, Butler, and Elaine R. Gregg, 35, 1044 Poga Rd, Butler, were both charged with robbery.

Police said a woman left the Food City at 920 Broad St., just before 11 p.m. July 28 and was placing her groceries in her vehicle when she was approached by a man who grabbed her purse and wrist.

The victim told police the man told her to "let it go" as he was forcefully pulling her purse from her shoulder. The victim’s purse contained cash, credit cards and other personal items.

The man ran away after taking the purse. During the investigation, police learned that the man had arrived in a vehicle and fled in that same vehicle after the robbery.

Through video surveillance, witness statements and the investigation, police identified the robber as Moretz and Gregg as the vehicle's driver, police said in a news release.

Moretz and Gregg face hearings on the charges Sept. 10 in Carter County Sessions Court.
