Carter County domestic dispute call ends in DUI charge

Staff report • Aug 12, 2013 at 4:13 PM

ELIZABETHTON — An investigation into an alleged domestic dispute ended up with an arrest on a drunken driving charge over the weekend.

Lt. Jeff Markland responded to a call on Browns Branch Road early Sunday morning. Markland said Robert Puckett complained to him about his son-in-law, Jeremy Demster, 33, 246 Browns Branch Road. Puckett reportedly said Demster threatened to come to his residence for a fight.

While Markland was talking with Puckett, he said a GMC truck drove past, which Puckett said was occupied by Demster and his friend, Cody Allen Maynard, 26, 528 Lee Ave.

Markland got in his car to follow the truck. As he rounded a curve near 557 Browns Branch Road, Markland saw the truck had run off the road and struck several mailboxes and was stuck in a ditch. He said Maynard was attempting to get the truck out of the ditch and Demster was standing in the road.

After stopping to check on the men, Markland arrested both of them. Maynard was charged with driving under the influence and Demster was charged with public intoxication. Both men are scheduled to answer the charges on Sept. 30.
