Jason Lee Avery, 38, 883 W. Main St., Apartment 2, Johnson City, was turned over to the Carter County Sheriff's Department by the Washington County Sheriff's Department. He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and theft over $1,000.
Charlene Woodby of Concord Lane, Johnson City, told Deputy Tracie Phipps of the Carter Sheriff's Department at 5:30 a.m. on June 11 that Avery and a woman were at her house between the hours of 5-5:30 a.m. Woodby said when she asked the couple to leave they refused unless she gave them money and a ride to another location in Johnson City.
Woodby told Investigator Larry Vaughn that when she refused their request, Avery assaulted her, pushed her to the floor, sat on her and began to choke and punch her. She said at some point she lost consciousness. Woodby said the woman who was with Avery handed him a kitchen knife, which he placed in his back pocket.
Woodby said she was able to get away from Avery, ran to her window and screamed for help. Avery and the woman then left the residence. After they left, she realized they had taken money she had in her pocket, her cell phone and the keys to her 1996 Chevrolet Blazer.
The car was found by the Johnson City Police Department at 12:58 a.m. the next day at the intersection of Indian Ridge Road and State of Franklin Road.
