Johnson City police: Passenger grabbed wheel from driver, crashing vehicle into I-26 bridge

Staff Report • Jul 10, 2013 at 4:51 PM

An early morning crash on Interstate 26 in Johnson City led to the arrest today of a Kingsport man on a reckless endangerment charge.

Bradley M. Harris, 25, 633 Jackson St., Kingsport, was accused of grabbing the steering wheel from the driver during an argument, causing the car to crash into the North Roan Street overpass in the eastbound lane of I-26.

Police said Jessica J. Sykes, 31, also of Kingsport, was driving east on I-26 in a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday when she and her passenger, Harris, became involved in a heated argument.

Harris told police Skyes had looked away and crashed the Malibu into the overpass. After further investigation, however, police determined that Harris had grabbed the steering wheel from the driver, causing the crash, police said in a report.

Both Harris and Sykes admitted that they had been drinking, police said, and Sykes performed well on field sobriety tests.

Medical personnel checked both the driver and her passenger at the scene. No injuries were reported.

Harris was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $10,000 bond with a Sessions Court appearance set for later today.
