A Jonesborough man was arrested early this morning after allegedly punching his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach and pointing a rifle at his own head.
Jonathan L. Roten, 28, 106 Clover Run, Jonesborough, was arrested about 1 a.m. after a Washington County Sheriff's Deputy was called to his residence.
In a court record, Deputy Jimmy Martin said Roten's girlfriend, Dawn Bates, reported that she and Roten had been arguing over two children when he left the residence on foot claiming that he was going to Woodridge hospital for treatment of a mental condition.
Bates feared for her safety, so she locked the door, but Roten returned a few minutes later, kicked the door open and went after the woman. She tried fleeing to a back room and calling for help, but Roten was able to take her phone away.
Bates told Martin that Roten slammed her head on a dresser and punched her in the stomach. Bates was about nine weeks pregnant with Roten's child, according to the court record.
Roten broke Bates' phone to prevent her from calling for help. She managed to get outside and screamed for help, but Roten pulled her back inside. He took a .30-06 rifle from a bedroom closet and confronted her again. He walked around with the rifle while arguing with her before placing the rifle's barrel under his own chin. Bates later convinced Roten to put the rifle back in the closet.
Roten was charged with aggravated domestic assault and jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $50,000 bond. A hearing was set for this afternoon in Sessions Court.
Bates was taken to Johnson City Medical Center to be checked for injuries.
