South Broadway Street is closed from East Main Street to East Market Street in Johnson City while workers with Elizabethton’s Summer-Taylor and city public works employees near completion of a project that includes installation of new culverts and water drainage lines in the low-lying area. The city awarded a $833,000 contract to Elizabethton’s Summers Taylor to replace old 48-inch underground pipe with a new 3-foot by 12-foot culvert from the housing authority property, under the intersection and along the north side of South Broadway, where it will empty into the expanded wetlands area. The company has completed underground work at the intersection. City workers have now begun tying into an outlet where a Brush Creek tributary carries water through the Keystone area. Once the installation ins complete, Summers-Taylor will pave the intersection. The city will pave an added right turn lane off East Main, construct new curbing and install new traffic signals.
