It was “Wonderful Wednesday” at Milligan College. Classes for traditional undergraduates were canceled Wednesday, April 2, and a variety of social activities culminating with a professionally produced fireworks display were enjoyed during the college’s annual surprise holiday.
This spring holiday is a college tradition dating back to 1969. Known as “Wonderful Wednesday,” the holiday does not always fall on a Wednesday. A veil of secrecy surrounds the exact date and theme of the surprise holiday each year. Activities are planned by Milligan’s Campus Activities Board.
This year’s theme was “It’s the Most Wonderful Day of the Year ? A Holiday Extravaganza.”
Each activity throughout the day corresponded with a different holiday, beginning with a Christmas Brunch at 10:30 a.m. in McCormick Dining Center followed by an Easter egg hunt at noon.
Throughout the afternoon, students participated in Memorial Day Intramurals and the Arbor Day Tree Climb. They also relaxed in the Labor Day Lounge and enjoyed a Hershey’s Kiss candy at the Valentine Kissing Booth.
Other highlights of the day included a St. Patrick’s Day Waterslide, complete with a touch of green water for the occasion, and the Presidents Day Dunking Booth, featuring Milligan President Dr. Bill Greer.
There was a New Year’s Eve Party at 4:30 p.m., followed by a traditional Thanksgiving dinner served at 5 p.m. in the McCormick Dining Center.
Following dinner, students participated in a Mardi Gras King Cake Contest. The fun continued into the dark with the highlight of the holiday festivities, an on-campus fireworks display, at 8:30 p.m. Finally, the festivities concluded with an on-campus movie on the green at 9:15 p.m.
