Mary Gobble and Margaret Greene on Roan Mountain (Submitted by Polly Booher)
Hi, my mother, Mary Gobble, and her longtime friend, Margaret Greene (whose husband used to be a reporter/photographer for the Press-Chronicle) and who are both in their 90's, just took a walk up on the Roan.
Both these ladies grew up on the Roan and remember the days of walking from the village to the top of the Roan as little girls. Both these ladies remember the days of the Cloudland Hotel that used to occupy a spot on the top, and both love this place with all their hearts.
Because of age and health, it is unlikely that both will have a chance to return to walk this mountain again, as Margaret could just barely make it from the parking lot to the lookout due to serious back problems and constant pain, yet both were chatting and enjoying its beauty once again.
While we were disappointed that the Roan was not yet in bloom, we did see a few buds this past weekend. And these two old friends got to remember many wonderful times on this mountain.
Thanks, Polly Booher, daugther of Mary Gobble, Cary, NC 27513.
