BRISTOL — A two-vehicle collision on Interstate 81 left at least one person dead and two others with “extremely serious injuries,” according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

On Saturday night, emergency personnel responded to the scene after a tractor-trailer collided with a sedan on Interstate 81 near exit 74A.

The resulting wreckage caused authorities to close both the northbound and southbound lanes of travel outside Bristol.

In an email communication, THP Sgt. Bill Miller said one person died as a result of the collision, while two others “have extremely serious injuries.”

Members of the Bristol Police Department and Bristol Fire Rescue responded to the scene initially, while the THP and members of its Critical Incident Response Team arrived later to investigate the incident.

The interstate was closed until further notice as authorities worked to contain the scene.

A two-vehicle accident on Interstate 81 outside of Bristol may have resulted in the deaths of three people.

Preliminary information from Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Miller indicates that a commercial truck collided with a passenger car on the Interstate. While emphasizing that the information was in its early stages, Miller said as few as one and as many as three people may have died as a result of the accident.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of traffic have been closed as emergency crews respond to the scene.

Bristol Police Department staff said their officers are assisting with traffic while THP is traveling to the scene. Miller added that THP's Critical Incident Response Team was en route, as well.
