Johnson City’s J Penny followed up his Oct. 27 Atlanta Marathon victory with a new personal-best run (2:36.21) at the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville, Ala., on Saturday.
The 26-year-old Penny, who ran at David Crockett and East Tennessee State, finished fourth to win $300 and qualified for the Boston Marathon by more than 30 minutes.
Rocket City has become on the faster southern marathons as of late, bringing in the stiff regional competition Penny was looking for to run a new fastest time.
He said he went out a bit conservatively in Atlanta, and went out harder on Saturday finding a comfortable spot in a pack of five for the first half of the race.
Saturday’s victor was 35-year-old Josh Whitehead (2:27:25), who battled Brian Shelton over the course. Justyne Mudy, 29, won the women’s race in 2:46:34.
