ELIZABETHTON — Owner Ed Odom got a surprise when he came to work at his business, Odom Auto Sales, on Thursday morning.
"I saw the glass in the front doors was broken out," Odom said of the entrance to the building that had once been a bowling alley.
It wasn't a burglar who caused the damage. Odom found a doe in the bathroom.
"I knew it was scared, so I got out," Odom said.
The Elizabethton Police Department was called to the scene of the forced entrance. All five lanes of Elk Avenue were blocked for a short time until the doe was able to escape the building and sprint across the highway, heading for the Watauga River.
Odom said he was relieved that neither the deer nor anyone else was injured. He said the deer did not cause any damage other than the broken front door. He said he expected to have the door repaired by the end of the day.
