ELIZABETHTON — A Wednesday afternoon fire at the Zoomerz convenience store will close the business at 701 Broad Street for a few weeks.

Elizabethton Fire Chief Barry Carrier said the first firefighters on the scene at 12:45 p.m. reported flames coming from the southeast corner of the roof. The flames were quickly extinguished, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Carrier said the fire was in a space between the ceiling and roof. He said a contractor was working on some electrical issues in the store at the time the fire broke out.

Fire marshal Jack Buckles said there is a possibility the fire was caused by an electrical problem. Buckles said he will be back at the store on Thursday with the city's chief electrical inspector to check the building.

Buckles said it could not be immediately determined how long the store will be closed. He said in addition to checking the store's electrical wiring, there is also an 8-by-8 hole in the roof made by the firefighters and the need to clean up the water damage inside the store.

The Zoomerz on West Elk Avenue is not affected by the closure.
