An early-morning house fire in Limestone destroyed the home and three cars, but the residents got out safely because they had smoke detectors, according to a fire official.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. at 1333 Barkley Road, Limestone Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Mike Kinnick said.

“The residents were home. They said the smoke detectors woke them up and they wouldn’t have woken up if they hadn’t them,” he said.

Kinnick said the residence was an older structure with little or no fire-proofing inside the walls, which made the fire spread quickly. Three cars – one on the carport and two in the driveway – were also destroyed, he said.

In addition to Limestone VFD, Sulphur Springs VFD and the Jonesborough Fire Department responded. Kinnick said firefighter were on scene until around 8:30 a.m.
