Former Rogersville cop claims he was fired over allegation of affair with businessman’s wife

ROGERSVILLE — The writers of Peyton Place couldn’t have come up with a more sordid tale of sex, power and corruption than was spun by former Rogersville police officer James Hammonds at Tuesday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.
Hammonds, who had served as Rogersville’s assistant police chief for nearly a decade, was fired July 11 by RPD Chief Doug Nelson and City Recorder Bill Lyons.
The official reason given for the firing was “due cause,” and the city has declined requests from the Times-News to release more specific reasons for Hammonds’ firing.
