Runway resurfacing to shut down flight operations at Tri-Cities Regional Airport

BLOUNTVILLE — A resurfacing project for the 8,000-foot main runway at Tri-Cities Regional Airport will take place this weekend and next weekend.The massive $15.7 million task means all flight operations will be shut down on both weekends starting at 8 p.m. Friday and ending at 9 a.m. Monday.“If people had travel plans that weekend, they are certainly disappointed they can’t use the airport,” TCRA Executive Director Patrick Wilson said of the public’s reaction to the runway closure. “At the same time, we try to help them understand we picked a low volume time of year. We tried to avoid heavy summer travel, race weekend and holiday travel...The September window was the best time for that...The other low time is January, but the weather prevents us from doing it then....Typically, the flights on the weekend are fewer and they are less full.”
