• $118.5M budget heads to Washington County Commission. The Washington County Commission’s Budget Committee will recommend to the full commission Aug. 26 a proposed $118.5 million budget, pending review by the Board of Education of a three-step move to balance the school system’s budget and leave it with about $3 million in the bank.
• First day of Umoja Festival a success for storytellers. Just as craft and food vendors were starting to wait on visitors at the 17th annual Umoja Festival Friday, the chairs in the gazebo area between East Main and East Market streets were quickly being claimed, as many festivalgoers took a break in the shade to listen to some stories.
• See Carson Peters on 'The Tonight Show'. ELIZABETHTON — Nine-year-old Carson Peters and his parents flew back to East Tennessee on Friday after a busy and successful week that included winning a bluegrass championship in Virginia and his first nationwide television appearance on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
