Robert and Virginia Looney, Elizabethton, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013.
The couple were married on Nov. 17, 1963, at Mount Vernon Methodist Church, Danville, Va., by The Rev. Dr. William Watkins.
The couple were involved in The Little Theater Danville before they married.
Mr. Looney worked for Dan River Mills, Danville, as a chemist; FMC Corp., Front Royal, Va., which later became Avtex Fibers Corp., as technical manager; North American Rayon Corp., Elizabethton, as vice president and technical manager; Columbus Electric, Johnson City, as president; and he retired from his own manufacturing consulting practice in 2003. He also owned a local American Roof-Brite franchise. He led the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the Rotary Club.
Mrs. Looney worked at George Washington High School, Danville, as a mathematics and drama teacher; Warren County High School, Front Royal, where she taught mathematics, was creative director of the Front Royal Little Theater and was director of the WCHS drama program. She was a substitute teacher in the Tri-Cities for several years before teaching mathematics at Science Hill for 10 years, where she was involved in the drama program and retired in 2004.
The couple have two children, Mark Looney and wife Andrea, McLean, Va., and Brian Looney and wife Jeelna, Marina Del Rey, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Jake and Kendall Looney, McLean, Va., Davin Looney, Marian Del Rey, Calif.
