Carter County Budget Committee seeks to correct ‘back door tax’ for 911 funding

ELIZABETHTON — The Budget Committee of the Carter County Commission took steps Monday night to correct a funding problem that state 911 officials criticized as a “back door tax.”
After listening to an explanation from Matt Bailey, the local 911 board chairman, the Budget Committee voted to recommend that the county restore $24,228 that had been cut from the 911 revenue over the past six years.
The committee will recommend to the County Commission next week to take the money from the General Fund and transfer it to the Carter County Emergency Communications District. The vote to recommend the transfer was 7-1, with Chairman Tom “Yogi” Bowers the only dissenter.
