GREENEVILLE –– Two people found dead under a bridge in Greene County Sunday may have died in Cocke County, according to the Greene County sheriff.
“We have not ruled out it (their deaths) occurred here,” Greene County Sheriff Steve Burns said.
Burns identified the victims as 20-year-old Cortney Amber Thompson and 21-year-old Terrance Logan Stewart. A middle name and age given earlier for Stewart were incorrect.
Stewart and Thompson’s bodies were discovered just after 7 a.m. Sunday under the Newport Highway Bridge. This bridge is part of Tenn. Hwy. 321, which is the main road between Greeneville and Newport.
Both victims had been shot.
Burns said the victims had a Dandridge address but may have been staying recently in Newport.
“Actually, based on all the information we received it more or less sent us back to Cocke County,” Burns said.
The sheriff said his investigators, working with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, spent all day Sunday and Monday in Cocke County.
Burns said the investigation was being treated as a double homicide.
Anyone with information about the deaths of Thompson and Stewart was asked to call the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 423-798-1800 or the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND or the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office.
