ELIZABETHTON — An employee of the city of Elizabethton was badly injured Tuesday morning at the city garage, 729 S. Sycamore St., when a 55-gallon drum blew up.
Elizabethton Fire Chief Barry Carrier said the man was cutting the top off the barrel with a plasma cutter when the accident happened.
The man later was identified as Bobby Lilly. He was listed in serious condition at Johnson City Medical Center.
Fire personnel said the man packaged and transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
Carrier said he has requested assistance from state bomb and arson investigator Don Cogan to investigate the accident.
City Manager Fred Edens was not yet available to provide information on any damage to the facility or equipment.
