An Erwin man was arraigned in Washington County on Thursday on an aggravated assault charge that resulted from a fight over morphine pills, police said.
Jason Vestal, 22, 104 Frazier Road, Erwin, told Sessions Court Judge Robert Lincoln the medication was his mother’s and he believed another man stole them.
Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy David Cate responded to the incident on Frazier Road. The unnamed victim told Cate that he was sitting in a vehicle outside the residence when Vestal came outside and “started accusing him of taking … morphine pills,” Cate wrote in the affidavit of complaint.
The victim denied the theft and got out of the vehicle. That’s when Vestal hit him in the face, he said. The two fought and the victim also claimed Vestal hit him in the head with a rock before going back inside the house.
The victim also went into the residence and said Vestal came at him with a knife.
The “victim states that he then picked up a vacuum cleaner and hit him so the defendant wouldn’t stab him,” Cate put in the court record. Two witnesses also told Cate Vestal threatened the victim with the knife.
Vestal was arrested at the scene and taken to jail. He was being held on a $10,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Feb. 23.
