A city man was charged with holding a 4-year-old child in a locked room as his mother pleaded for him to be released, according to a police report.
Johnson City police were called to 1112 Carroll Creek Road just after midnight Tuesday, where they met Ashley Whaley, who told them Jonathan Belcher, 24, of that address, had locked himself in an upstairs bedroom with her son.
According to police, the child was yelling to be let out of the room but Belcher refused. Police said the door was barricaded.
Whaley continued to plead for her son to be let go and Belcher did open the door and release the child through contact with 911, police said.
Once the child was back with his mother, police tried to handcuff Belcher but he resisted, according to police. He was finally cuffed but continued to resist and kick, police said.
Belcher appeared to be under the influence of some kind of substance, according to police. Belcher reportedly told police he had used “bath salts.”
He was taken to Johnson City Medical Center. Belcher was taken into custody at the hospital later in the day Tuesday after being discharged.
Belcher was being held in the Washington County Detention Center on $5,000 bond. He was charged with false imprisonment and resisting arrest.
Belcher’s initial court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday in Sessions Court.
His next court date was scheduled for early February.
