A traffic stop Saturday led Johnson City police to charge an Elizabethton man with violating habitual motor offender and prohibited weapon laws.
Gregory P. Lewis, 36, 191 Old Stoney Creek Road, Elizabethton, was stopped for a seat belt violation on Milligan Highway near Twin Oaks Drive, police said in a news release.
A records check indicated Lewis' license had been revoked and he had been convicted as a habitual motor offender. He also had two prior driving on suspended license charges and a prior driving after a habitual offender conviction.
After arresting Lewis, police found a hunting knife with a 5-inch blade between the driver's seat and console while searching his vehicle.
He was charged with a seat belt violation, driving on revoked license third offense, violation of the habitual motor offender law and possession of a prohibited weapon. Police also seized his vehicle.
Lewis was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $7,000 bond pending a Sessions Court appearance Tuesday.
